As part of a five-year plan to strengthen coherence across its PreK-12 program, Agnes Irwin built a curriculum framework with clearly defined goals. The English Department knew what strong writing looked like and wanted to calibrate instruction to the school's writing learning progressions. But deeply examining qualitative student work across courses and grades was too time-intensive to be a regular practice.
In the first two weeks of school, middle schoolers completed quick writes in three modes: narrative, informational, and persuasive. Pascack's teachers already collected rich qualitative evidence: lab reports, essays, inquiry tasks. But reviewing 100+ lab reports to spot class-wide gaps took hours or days, and administrators wanted to know whether students were improving on the skills being taught across sections, not just whether one student got good feedback today.
